Exploring the True Meaning of Freedom

In the US, we associate July with freedom and independence and we traditionally believe our nation to be a beacon that symbolizes these values. In light of the recent SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe v Wade, these are interesting concepts to ponder.

We are hearing a lot of messages in communities, advocacy groups, and political media about the need to fight for our freedom. We also see the negative consequences of approaching this “fight” without internal awareness and elevated consciousness.

As yoga practitioners, we regularly contemplate the true meaning of freedom. Is it a right that is dictated by our government or is it a deeper, more internal experience?

In working with people from all walks of life for many years, I have heard many perspectives on personal freedom. I’ve talked to people in prison who felt their most liberated, people who were bedridden with sickness and yet felt extreme aliveness, and people who are estranged from their families of origin but feel like they can finally breathe.

How is this possible?

Is perhaps freedom a state of mind, not an outside construct? Maybe, just maybe, the essence of our freedom starts in our minds. If we fail to grasp this essential component, how can we effectively establish and support our rights and the rights of others in society? This month we will explore the principles of yoga that teach us how to cultivate and experience authentic liberation.
