Summer Solstice and the Winds of Change

We are living at an unprecedented time on the planet. This is a time of great awakening, of great challenge and of great possibility. Summer solstice, which happens on June 21st, is our longest day of the year and shines light on all that is working and all that is not.

In morning meditation we have been working with the air element. Sai Baba said “all action results from thought,” so it is very important that we are mindful of our thoughts and that we know how to organize them and assess them. The air element is very connected to our thoughts, very connected to our ability to be objective, our ability to put talk into action. Sometimes we’re all talk, we don’t put our thoughts into action and nothing changes. Sometimes we can be in a fury of action, but there’s no organization or direction to it, we don’t have a linear thought process and end up spinning our wheels.

The air element helps us take our thoughts, our desires and help us create a logical timeline. If we engage with the air element properly, it helps us create the action steps that affect change. It can help us become objective and mentally inspired, that is why when we think of the air, we think of the clouds, we think of the sky, we think of that bigger perspective or observer point of view. Feeling the freedom of air opens up a bigger way of thinking, more broad-minded and expansive. We really need this air element because we can have a tendency to get very stuck in repetitive or restrictive thought patterns and the air element helps us to step outside of that.

We can get very rooted in constructs and beliefs that we were taught when we were young that don’t necessarily serve us now that we’re older. The more that we can embrace the air element, the more we can get into the heart, the more we can fly above what we were taught and see what is right for us, right for our circumstance, right for our family or right for our relationships.

The following meditation will take you on a little journey through the air, connecting to the parts of you that are open and more expanded. The goal is to feel the freedom of our soul and find the support of your deep knowingness of what is right for you.

Air Element Meditation:

Tune in: Ong namo guru dev namo

Inhale deeply. Exhale completely. Begin to breathe long and deep. Breathing in relaxation and exhaling any tension.

Start to connect with the air element. The air element that is all around you and flows within you.

Traveling the body with the breath, you inhale deeply, bringing that air in your body, assessing. What might be open and what might be needing a little attention? Start to feel those spaces in you that are open and free.

Now, as you scan your body, maybe there’s one thing that comes to mind, a problem you’re trying to sort out. A situation you need to navigate. Something you want to call into your life and you don’t know how. Bring that to mind.

Continue to relax into this space of air. Become aware of this thing that you would like to work on today.

Take three more deep breaths, inhaling relaxation and clarity and exhaling tension and resistance. Now clearly bring to mind the thing you would like to work on or improve in your life today.

And now I want you to imagine that you walked outside, it’s a beautiful spring day, beautiful wild flowers are all around. The sun is shining. The temperature is perfect. You see a landscape of greenery and beautiful splotches of color from these wildflowers. The blooms of the flowers are bursting with life.

You can hear birds chirping, you can hear the sounds of nature all around you, and you feel at one with all of it. You begin to feel held and supported in this beautiful garden.

And as you start to gaze at the flowers, you more clearly notice their shape and color. A beautiful butterfly catches your attention. This butterfly is fluttering around and it’s kind of curious to you how it flies, why it darts back and forth almost in circles at times. You become mesmerized by this butterfly watching its every move.

As your watching this butterfly stop on a rose and just gently flap its wings slowly and calmly staying still. You don’t even notice that you started to grow your own set of wings. You study the motion of the butterfly. Watching the way the butterfly flutters flaps its wings a little faster now to take flight. And miraculously, you notice that your wings start to flap too.

As you watch the butterfly, you begin to practice this motion, fluttering the wings and then flapping the wings. As you start to connect to this motion, the wing flapping becomes more coordinated and you begin to lift off the ground.

Just a little at first and then higher and higher.

And as you take flight, start to see yourself lifting above the flowers, above the bushes, above the trees and above the houses. At first, you experience a wave of amazement, you can’t believe that you’re actually flying. Noticing everything below you. And as you continue to fly, you feel a sense of freedom. A sense of lightness, and as you get more comfortable, you realize that being above everything in your life is giving you the gift of a broader perspective.

You’re observing the things around you from this higher vantage point. The thing that you’ve been worrying about, the thing you decided to work on looks much smaller from here, much less scary. From this higher perspective it is much easier to sort it out.

You may even be able to see a path through that you never though of before. It all looks much different from this vantage point. Having a sense of space between you and it allows you to gain a higher perspective. And from this higher perspective, you might feel a sense of freedom to explore all possibilities.

This may be a time to change your course of action. Maybe you’re seeing something you’re worrying about and realizing it isn’t that big of a deal at all. Or maybe you’re realizing that the worry is holding you back from finding the solution.

Maybe you’re starting to realize that just as you need to trust these wings to allow you to fly above all that you’re seeing, you might need to trust in something bigger than you to help you find your way through.

Allow yourself to fly just a little bit more. Notice the sights you’re seeing below you, notice the sensations you feel inside of you. How does this kind of freedom feel for you?

It might feel empowering. It might feel a little scary, just notice. Notice what it feels like to see things from a higher perspective. Take those sensations in and embrace the sense of freedom you may be feeling.

Now, gently make your way down towards flowers we originally started in. Taking this experience, freedom of flight and the bigger picture with you.

As you land back down in the garden, allow yourself to continue to wonder about the possibilities. Continue to feel this sense of freedom and possibility.

What might be your next steps forward? How does that thing look different now? And notice how you may feel differently. When you have clarity, then take a nice deep breath in and exhale completely.

Again, inhale deeply and exhale completely. Begin to wiggle through your fingers and your toes. Stretch your body in any way that feels good to you and slowly make your way to present moment.
